These small mussels:

  1. Were introduced into the Great Lakes several decades ago and have wrecked havoc throughout many of the major water ways of the East and Central United States.

  2. They cover everything, they stink and they leave behind razor sharp shells.

  3. They reproduce rapidly and can be transported to new waters by adults clinging onto watercraft or equipment, or their tiny off spring floating in water inside boats, engines etc.

  4. They showed up in Lake Mead about 2 years ago and have spread down the Colorado River waterways into California and Arizona.

  5. The only way to keep them out of Bear Lake and other waters of the west is by boat owners making sure their own craft and equipment are properly CLEANED, DRAINED, and DRIED between water bodies.
